The total population of the world is recorded to be around 7.6 billion and continues to grow as each day passes. It is predicted that by 2100, the population will reach 11.2 billion. As the population continues to grow, the question that arises is: Will there be enough food to supply to this increasing population? This article will discuss what smart farming is and how IoT, robotics, and AI are tackling one of the biggest problems of the century.

In order to increase the production of food and output of farming, two methods can be employed: first, by increasing the yield per unit area and the second is by increasing the cultivation area.

Smart farming which is also called precision agriculture plays a major role in sustainable intensification. It functions with the help of IoT devices, remote sensing, robotics, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics into a crop production system that is high resolution and efficient.

Industrial scale farming has a few negative aspects which include the utilization of tractors, harvesters, sprayers and other kinds of heavy machinery. This compromises and compacts the ability of the crop to form a root system that is healthy. Farmers don’t fear the technological innovations coming in the farming industry, however, some of them are reactionary.

An example is a design called ‘Harry’, a drilling and planting robot by the Small Robot Company which was created to take accurate actions.

If projects like Harry are to be started in the farming sector, the devices would require to receive and send data over reliable and fast wireless connections. This means that the availability of mobile broadband would become an unfavorable factor in that. Smart farming is still in its early days, however, the technology can be used to change the way processes work in the agricultural sector along with improving the quality and quantity of products.

Furthermore, with the help of IoT and other technological innovations, farmers can easily track the needs of animals and provide them with nutrition as per the requirement. This helps in improving herd health and to prevent the occurrence of diseases in animals. The good part is that in the 21st century, farmers have access to soil scanning, GPS, Internet of Things and data management technologies.

One of the advantages of smart farming includes tons of data along with various farming sensors that track and predict weather conditions, the progress of crop growth, quality of soil, or the health of cattle. The risks associated with production are lessened and efficiency is increased. Also, these technological innovations will help reduce wastage and manage costs in a better way. Furthermore, with the help of process automation, the efficiency of business will increase.

Therefore, with the increasing population with every passing day, a need for efficient and smart farming exists. Technological innovations like the Internet of Things and other smart devices will help in making farming processes more efficient.
