2018 has been a phenomenal year for technological advances. Since the past decade or so, each year has been characterized by new trends and methodologies with which our generation defines it. To get a better insight into what we feel was the first technological advancements and innovations, here is a compilation of some of the breakthroughs that revolutionized the way we perceive the world!
3-D metal printing
When 3D printing came onto the market, virtually every sector was affected by it. The fact that we could print out solid material as it is on display was a feature that we were still wrapping our heads around. The material was normally synthesized by the one that was supported by the printer. However, 2018 say a great modification to the entire process and has introduced the option of instant metal fabrication. This process has the potential to re-energize the manufacturing sector since it will exponentially cut down the cost of tools and material needed.
Sensing City
Metropolitan region and highly populated urban centers are characterized by a huge influx of traffic form generally all directions, cramped living spaces, and poor maintenance of public resources. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, implemented methodologies and analytics which the company believes can help make the collective process of designing cities more environmentally sustainable. This means that the smart implemented design would result in the least amount of traffic jams and good living conditions for all. This technology accounts for the collective history of a lot of different cities and uses the data to act accordingly.
Quantum advancement
The word ‘quantum’ is still rarely heard into the applied sciences field. However, this was bound to change in 2018, with the onset of Quantum computing and its applications. 2018 saw the great popularization of the applications of Quantum computing and has set a benchmark on which further advancements are bound to be made. A seven-qubit quantum Computer, designed by IBM, was recently used by Harvard researchers to simulate and design a molecule. Beryllium hydride, the molecule simulated, is by far the largest molecule that has been observed under the light of quantum computing.
Biological fortune telling
Biology has long predicted the presence of hereditary diseases, which could be passed on to offspring by parents. Even though the process was intensely understood, scientist found it exceptionally hard to accurately find out if a particular offspring is susceptible to a given disease. However, 2018 revolutionized the whole game plan and introduced the feature of genomic analysis which could be used to accurately predict the presence of diseases such as Cancer and Alzheimer’s. Since our genetics dictate all the external and internal features of our life, it was high time we tapped into its potential. Major players in this arena who have helped make this feature more accessible for general use are Helix, 23andMe, Myriad Genetics, BK Biobank, and the Broad Institute.
